Piercing One's Eyes
2002
Is it correct to assume that the human gaze always reaches the thing chosen as the object? Many people may argue that, if you are looking at an object, your gaze must have reached it.
However, I have learned that there are some situations where the gaze does not reach an object at all, even when it seems obvious to others that the person is looking at it. Although it is not something that can be physically measured and talked about, what I heard from Toshiharu Takeuchi (1925–2009), a stage director, was very useful. When the person who was speaking asked the person who had been listening to him if he could tell him just a part of what he had just said, the person who was told to do so turned pale. It was because that person had been thinking about other things and pretending to be listening to his interlocutor. Not only did I think that the same situation could be held to exist as regards the gaze, but I was also convinced that, in contrast to this situation, the gaze could be strong enough to pierce an object.
